Deadpool is Here to "Chimi" Your "Changa"!

If you’re as clueless as we are about the the title, consider yourself normal (insert nervous giggle here). However, if you’re a fan of the off-beat, rather eccentric Marvel superhero Deadpool, you’d probably recognize the name of his favourite Mexican cuisine scattered here and there for lame humour.

Deadpool is your non-typical anti-hero character endowed with an often twisted and dark sense of humour, especially when he’s dealing with the bad guys. With Deadpool’s sense of comedy, you can expect many ‘cards against humanity’ types of jokes.

This month fans will be in for a real treat as the first live action Deadpool movie hits cinemas all over the world. We lucky Malaysians may even get the opportunity to catch this movie as early as February 9  during CNY sneak screenings before the general release on February 11. Sorry, U.S. fans you'll have to wait until February 12!

This movie, directed by Tim Miller, stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular character and supported by the likes of Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano, Stefan Kapičić and relative newcomer Brianna Hildebrand. As usual, Marvel legend Stan Lee will be making a cameo appearance as, of all things, a strip club MC.

The movie follows Wade Wilson, a Special Forces operative who finds out he’s suffering from cancer and volunteers for an experimental program which is supposed to heal him. He survives the process but emerges with a disfigured body, accelerated healing abilities and an indestructible physique. Not to mention, also a rather unstable mind, not that this is a bad thing.

Bet you never saw Deadpool in a tough macho guy pose before!
Wade then reinvents himself into a super hero called Deadpool when the man who was responsible for destroying his life starts messing around with his girlfriend. He is assisted by two other characters with superpowers, Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Colossus.

For a sneak peek into the new movie, click ‘play’ below for the Red Band Trailer, i.e. 18 years & above for violence, profanity & adult innuendos. (Look out for that awesome close-up ass shot.  Impressive!)

Also for the benefit of the ladies, this movie is also marketed as a Valentine’s Day romantic drama. If you can ignore the scenes where Deadpool blows out the bad guy’s brains, that is. Enjoy a more touchy-feely version of the Deadpool trailer below:

If the trailer is anything to go by, this can turn out to be a much better romantic hit than ‘The Notebook’. No, serious.

Judging by everything we’ve seen so far, this movie is bound to be entertaining and not just for its humour. I mean, Ryan Reynolds does an awesome job of switching between the moody serious side and the lighthearted offbeat humour that is Deadpool’s signature character.  You know, he’s called the Merc with the Mouth for the simple reason that he annoys most of the other characters with his constant inane jabbering.

We’re also noting that local viewers will get more ‘ong’ at the cinemas if they’re watching it during the Chinese New Year season, since, you know, Deadpool’s outfit is red and stuff. Bring your (open minded) grandma along and tell her that this is an auspicious movie!

For those who haven't read comic books (really?), Deadpool (real name Wade Winston Wilson) is a fictional antihero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Fabian Nicieza and artist/writer Rob Liefeld, the character first appeared in The New Mutants #98 cover-dated (Feb. 1991). Deadpool was depicted as a supervillain when he made his first appearance in The New Mutants and later in issues of X-Force, but has since evolved into the role of an antihero. Deadpool is a disfigured and mentally unstable mercenary with the superhuman ability of an accelerated healing factor. He is known as the "Merc with a Mouth" because of his talkative nature and tendency to break the fourth wall, which is used by writers to create humorous effect. (source: Wikipedia).

On the merchandise front, the Outpost Movie Recon Team (M.R.T.) has been scouring local retailers for Deadpool related merchandise and promotions. Unfortunately official Deadpool merchandise is really limited locally, but here's some of what stuff to collect, eat and "wash eyes":
  • Collectibles Hobby Store Lil’ Monsters  at Jaya Shopping Centre has some cutesy Deadpool goodies so pay them a visit soon because they are all gone.
Aww, ain't this Deadpool super-cute?

Make your own Deadpool sculpted ice or jello.
  • If you’re wondering where to find Chimichangas in Malaysia, head on over to Thyme Out, a Mexican restaurant in SS15 Subang Jaya. Chimichanga is a deep-fried burrito that is popular in Southwestern U.S. cuisine and the Mexican states of Sinaloa and Sonora. The dish is typically prepared by filling a flour tortilla with a wide range of ingredients, most commonly rice, cheese, machaca, carne adobada, or shredded chicken, and folding it into a rectangular package. It is then deep-fried and can be accompanied with salsa, guacamole, sour cream, and/or cheese. (source: Wikipedia)
Deadpool's favourite eats: CHIMICHANGAS! Served in chicken, beef or lamb at Thyme Out.
Nom, nom!
  • Hot Toys are releasing a 1/6th scale Deadpool collectible figure which is 100% movie accurate. You can't get your greasy hands (after eating chimichangas) on these yet, but pre-order one fast from your neighbour collectible shop like Lil' Monsters before they all run out.

Take a challenge to pose your various Deadpool in action like this!

There's more Deadpool comics now than ever before!

  • 20th Century Fox Malaysia is also awarding Deadpool Movie Premiums on their weekly Caption Contest. Simply give Deadpool a witty line suited to the photo shown for chance to win assorted goodies.

Finally, 20th Century Fox Malaysia together with Outpost Productions are hosting the Ultimate Comic Book Movie Party for Deadpool on Wednesday February 10, 2016 at GSC Tropicana City Mall.
